My father never spoke much about his own family. It is only recently that I have come to appreciate that this was probably due to having lost two of his brothers to World War II, and then his father shortly after the war ended. An unexpected visit by an uncle of his, that was unknown to me, lead me to learning that I had a paternal great grandfather who made a stand, and in doing so, had in a small way left a mark. I was sixteen at the time and resolved that I would try and find out more about this great grandfather when I had the chance.
