To celebrate Edith's 70th Birthday Edith, myself, Bruce and the Sheards (Andrew, Heather, Ryan and Rachel) spent three days at the Bonamanzi Game Reserve. During that time we rose early for Game drives, one in the reserve itself and another to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. We also enjoyed a sun-downer boat Cruise on the Hluhluwe River that included bumping over a Hippo. The Game Guide at the controls being aware of the situation got a bigger fright than we did. Needless to say we roared through that section of the river on the return leg of the cruise. En route to the River Cruise jetty we passed through an excavation site that served as the source for stone used to maintain roads withing the reserve. The excavations had exposed aquatic fossils and we got to spend some time role playing as Archaeologists. The guide (Fred) who conducted all our excursions was impressed with Edith's knowledge and his own enthusiasm scored a booklet on the fossils to be found in the area. While we were there we also enjoyed a couple of games of cricket and badminton. Needless to say we also braved the very real bush and went for two walks. At sundown we would end up sitting around a great Boma Fire whilst enjoying sundowners before our evening meal. Finally in order to ensure that we did not get homesick, the local monkeys managed to raided two of our cottagelets whilst we were gadding about.
