Fallen Tree Right

In the natural course of events, trees either fall over, are blown over, or are knocked over. If the tree falls such that it either totally blocks, or partial blocks a road, it means that a team of people will have to attend to the problem at relatively short notice. This invariably happens, and I guess those affected should be grateful. Of course some may argue that these affected folk are paying rates and taxes and can thus expect that the problem will be shorted out.

Unfortunately that is not the case here in Pietermaritzburg. During the past three years I have twice personally gone out of my way to cut up and remove a branch that had broken off a tree, and fallen such that it was obstructing the traffic in Town Bush Road. I am quite sure that others living along Town Bush Road, and in other parts of Pietermaritzburg have done the same thing.

However, that is not the issue here. Rather. it is the manner in which the problem is tackled. The tree that ended up partially blocking McCarthy Drive over the weekend of 1/2 March 2014 is a good example. The two photographs in the banner of this post illustrate the state in which the tree was left by whoever attempted to attend to the problem. I simply cannot understand how it could have been left like that. (Click on either of the photographs to view an enlargement. Click again to remove the enlargement.)

Unfortunately this is not the only example, and I have written about it before, in fact as recently as last week. I am quite sure that it is not always private individuals that are involved here. Sometimes it must involve the Pietermaritzburg Department of Parks and Recreation, and in almost all cases, it ultimately always should.

So why is it that the level of service is so abysmal, and worse still, why do we continue to put up with it?
