The RYOBI RM-1202 Lawn Mower
A Mighty Mouse if ever there was one!

The RYOBI RM-1202 Lawn Mower

My wife and I live in two-bedromed unit in a residential complex that is situated in Howick. While our patience was tested waiting for the unit to be completed, we did make it, and thus far it has been a happy three plus years that we have spent in the complex.

The first big test we faced was establishing a lawn because: 1) we obviously needed one, and 2) to keep the mud off our Scottish Terriers feet. Once the lawn was established we had to decide between either allowing the complex to cut the grass, or do it ourselves. We decided to do it ourselves.

To cut the lawn I needed a lawn mower, and it did not have to be big and powerful. We choose a RYOBI RM-1202, and it has simply been magnificent. The cut is perfect and everything that is cut ends up in the grass box. It is amazing and has to be a testament to the progress that has been made with respect to the design and construction of such a device.

But wait, there is more! This little mower is tough. The grass on the bank below our property is also covered with grass. It is cut with a Brush Cutter, and watching the process is not unlike watching an artistic performance. It is much the same as watching a Combined Harvester moving through a field of wheat. The top three-fifths is removed (TRIMMED) and the remaining two-fifths is left reaching for the sunlight.

It looks terrific, the surface is absolutely level. However the reality is very different. If you try to walk down a bank maintained as I have just described, your feet sink into the grass until they reach the soil level. They literally disappear. That is of course not a problem if the level of the soil consistently reflects that of the beautifully trimmed grass. Unfortunately that is not always the case, and if you are walking down the bank, and step into a depression that the grass is hiding, you could fall.

Before returning to the Mighty Mower, I would like to mention that I have read that the health of the root system of a lawn is proportional to the amount of grass you have above the soil. Rest assured the soil, of the complex banks is well bound.

Finally I would like to admit that I have at times really pushed the little lawn mower while using it to cut the grass on the bank below our home. It has on occasion blinked, and recently I thought the motor had seized as there were PUFFS of SMOKE! When it was obvious that the blade was not rotating, I turned the mower over over to find that it had lodged against a solid compacted clump of cut grass. I removed the compacted clump of grass, allowed the mower to cool, and we were back in business. Mighty Mouse was smiling again.
