Jam Shed
a Shiraz from Down Under
3 March 2025

During the years I spent working I would enjoy a beer or glass of wine within the context of a social setting. When I retired, that changed. Edith and I almost always have a glass of wine with our main meal of the day. To support that habit I have to visit a liquor store once a month in order to purchase a box (six bottles) of Sauvignon Blanc and a box of Shiraz.

While I do not buy plonk (very cheap wine), what I do buy is not that much more expensive. Since Edith and I relocated to Howick three years ago, I have made my purchases at the Greendale Spar Liquor Store. Spar is a large retail chain with stores all over the country.

Because I am wanting to purchase a box containing six bottles of a specific wine, I have to find a floor assistant. While it is true that the wine arrives at the Liquor Store in a box, it is seldom available like that.

This month I did not return to the Spar. Instead I went to Checkers, another large retail chain that recently opened a store closer to our home. The change meant that I needed to find new brands of Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. I also had to find a floor assistant.

The Shiraz I choose was Jam Shed, and I chose it because the price was right i.e., not that pricey. Later on when I had finished pouring my glass of Shiraz at home, I noticed that the Jam Shed was not in fact a South African wine. It was Australian. I also then remembered that I had drunk it before in Perth, the capital of Western Australia. I also remembered that I had drunk a South African Shiraz in Australia, also because the price was right.

So what is the point of all this? Well, a bottle of Jam Shed costs less here in South Africa (A$7.00), than it costs in Perth, Western Australia (A$10.00 - A$15.00). (Google search) If you can explain why that is the case, I would be interested in your explanation. In the mean time I will attribute it to Trumponomics.

If you have any comments, corrections, suggestions or plain criticism,
I would appreciate it if you would communicate the same to me.
