The Royal Hospital occupies the site where Pietermritzburg's Royal Hotel once stood. I ended up there when I realized I would not be able to return home from Mediclinic to recover from Minor Stroke that followed my Triple-Bypass and Carotid Artery surgery.

Ultimately I was disappointed. I expected Physiotherapy twice a day and that did not happen. There was Occupational Therapy, and Speech and Diet lessons. There were also supplements and I came home with a bunch of what I can only assume were promotional handouts.

While I was there they also tried to move me out of my two-bed ward at 10 PM so that the friend of someone who had just been admitted could join his friend who was in the ward I was in. I refused, and complained. The next day I received an apology.

The Nursing and the Food

The nursing and the food at Mediclinic was good. The nursing and the food at the Royal Hospital was excellent.

The Hospital Bug

After I had been home for a few days I went to see my doctor at the Howick Medical Centre Doctors rooms because I was coughing excessively. He examined my wounds and where the healing did not look satisfactory, he took swabs and sent them to the laboratory. The results revealed that I was infected with Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus haemolyticus, both known Hospital Bugs. I cannot say where I contracted these bugs..
