'Allo 'Allo Gardens! (AAG) Howick (uMngeni) AAG Blog Weather Station (WS) The named and the nameless!!! 30 November 2024 |
Since I retired some thirteen tears ago I have had a Davis Weather Station (DWS) in my garden. Two Pro2's and a Vantage Vue. The setup mostly worked well. I did experience some problems: 1) Tiny ants invaded the Vantage Vue, and communication with the data dongle in the Console. I also used Weewex to communicate with the data dongle. Weewex is an excellent piece of Open Source Software.
Now I have a Nameless Weather Station (NWS). You can view the console and sensor suite below. I have two issues with the weather station.
1) I cannot collect the data from this setup, not even to upload it to a Weather Service such as Weather Underground (WU). Given that I paid for the device and am also responsible for setting it up and maintaining it, I would have thought that the data it collects belongs to me. I should be able to access that data and do with it as I please. I guess I would probably want to send it to WU, and also display it as I see fit on my own weather web page.
2) As it stands on my bookshelf, the console is nameless, no name, no branding information, no manufacturing details, no warnings. I do find that rather strange and given that it was considerably cheaper than the other branded lookalikes, perhaps counterfeit. The list of links point to weather stations that look like mine and are available right now. That will of course change. and the links wil not stand the test of time.
So what is next. I guess I need to continue reading the Python programming book I started reading, and endeavour to write some Python code for a Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer. A program that tries to listen out for what the NWS Sensor Suite on top of the pole in the garden, is broadcasting at regular intervals.
