'Allo 'Allo Gardens ! (AAG) Howick (uMngeni) AAG Blog It is an ill wind that blows nobody any good & Yakutsk gets seriously cold 20 January 2024 |
Edith and I have had several so called Tornado experiences. The first was while camping at Midmar Dam 35 years ago. That time Hobie Cat yachts parked on the banks where flung across the width of the dam, Morgenzon campsite to Orient Park camp site. Our tents were trashed and we packed up and went home.
The second was not as bad. It passed by our Park View home in the Town Bush Valley in Pietermaritzburg, It took the top of a large tree and ripped Fascia Boards from our neighbour's home.
The third passed by our newly built retirement home in Howick two years ago. It fully opened our partially opened bathroom windows and poured rain through them. It also tossed roof sheeting from the row of homes above us all over the place. Luckily no was injured.
The most recent occurred a couple of days ago. It was the most severe incident and it caused significant damage as it cut a swathe across the town. The damage to trees and power lines was extensive. The photographs included below endeavour to show what parts of Howick looked like once the touch-down had been scored.
The damage was done in a couple of minutes, and the cleanup and restoration wil take several weeks.
Writing this reminded me of Yakutsk. Yakustk is a Russian city that is also the coldest city in the world. The maximum temperature is abpve 15°C for June, July and August. In fact it itypically above 22°C during that period i.e., during the summer. During May the max is 14°C. It is Spring. During September the max is 12°C. It is Autum. During the remaining months, it is below 3°C. It is winter. and it is mostly unbelievably cold!
So what is it with me and Yakutsk? Well I am interested in computing and the weather. Presently this passion is being satisfied with an attempt to build a weather station. To do so I am using a Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer, and various sensors for temperature etc.
When Howick was recently brushed by the tornado and the accompanying extreme weather experience, I started to put this blog together.
The severity with which it happened reminded me of the severity of the winters of Yakutsk. The last image thumb-nail displayed below is a copy of the Weather Underground Weather Forecast for Yakutsck for the 20 January 2024. Click on it to take a closer look.
Yakutsk is a fascinating place and so I invite (and even encourage) you to follow the Wikipedia link included below, in order to learn more about Yakutsk.
