Once Edith and I were engaged, I decided to make her a Kist. Once that was done and accepted, a double bed was a no brainer. Edith\'s father, Errol Saint George Day kindly made his garage workbench and tool cupboard available and so that is were they were constructed. The bench was inordinately low. I never asked why. Perhaps it was the bench Errol (I called him Dad) worked at as a boy.

Errol was always a kind and considerate man. When Edith and I moved into our first house in 1975, I finally had a garage. Not long after we had moved in, Errol arrived with a bench that he had made for me, word workers vice and all (As we no longer say here in Natal). It was taller, but probably not tall enough. Never the less, that bench was used for years, and if I am not mistaken, it is now in Bruce's garage.

The bench also came with a bench hook that I still use regularly. It features in one of the photographs, and here I should say the first time I tightened the screws holding it together, was here in Howick, 50+ years after it was first assembled!

The bench also came with a dust pan and brush that I also still use regularly. It too features in one of the photographs and here you are probably thinking surely the brush could not have lasted for 50 years. Well it has embedded in the handle genuine bristle, hair for the tail of a horse!

Beyond being a tribute to my father-in-law, this blog is also a tribute to my wife, literally the love of my live. She has been waiting for two years for a cupboard to be installed beneath the pedestal basin in our bathroom. The bench is a gift offered to compensate for my tardiness. It features Japanase Cedar, a temptation that Ryan and I could not resist whilst browsing at Timber solutions for suitable timber for the cupbaord.
