When my Davis Weather Station Console Dongle started to become problematic for the ump’teenth time I, 1) considered developing a Java application that would collect the recorded weather data directly from the Sensor Suite. It would run on a Raspberry Pi fitted with the required wireless receiver, 2) replacing it with a cheaper weather station, and 3) developing a Raspberry Pi Weather Station.
I chose option 3 and started with a Raspberry Pi and a Tipping Bucket Rain Guage.
This blog is meant to record my progress together with the WWW based guides/resources I used.
I have in the past sent my weather data to Weather Underground (WU). WU is my principal reference for the upcoming weather for the region I live in. If you visit WU and choose to change your weather station, a map will pop up showing the weather stations that are connected to WU and available in your area.Play around with this map and I am sure you will be amazed by it all.
Years ago I can remember telling a Computer Science class at the then University of Natal, that once weather forecasters had hardware that would allow them to simulate the weather globally, they willproduce regular highly accurate forecasts. I think that has now happened and am amazed by what they are doing.
Finally if you want to see what the weather is like in my region, there is a link to a photograph of the view from my dwelling on the ’Allo ’Allo Gardens Hope Page.
