Since Edith and I took over the responsibility of managing our Solar Panel/Inverter/Lithium Ion Battery setup, we have endeavoured to minimize the extent to which we rely on Eskom to power our essential electricity powered utilities. The essentials excludes the geyser, air con and stove. When we have consecutive sunny days it is simple. No need to boost the battery in the evening. When the next day is going to be cloudy, a decision has to be made, boost or "Tatta ma Chance" (Take a chance i.e., buy a Lottery Ticket).

Once the kettle has been boiled for the evening cup of coffee, the system is running the lights, connected electronic devices and the fridge. Sometimes I have been surprised by the extent to which the the battery level has dropped overnight. Now I have begun to suspect the fridge. Up until now I have known that the FRIDGE's electronics does not like an electricity supply that is not clean. The FRIDGE likes a nice consistent 50 Hz 230 Volt pure sine wave that never contains a SPIKE in the voltage.

I also thought that it was a frugal consumer of electricity. It appears that it is not that frugal, especially if we leave the door open while adding milk to our tea/coffee.

So this blog reflects my investigation regarding the power consumption of the ubiquitous FRIDGE. It also looks at energy household energy usage calculations, and how the cost of electricity (and the Big Mac Hamburger) in South Africa, compares with the rest of the world. Finally I have also used the blog to remember the Umgeni Power Station, a serious landmark at the foot of Durban's Southern Ridge.
