Given that Cathy was about to celebrate the BIG 70, and that her immediate family was divided between the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, it made perfect sense for us to meet somewhere in the middle. To make that happen Cathy's husband, Keith Kenyon used his time-share points to reserve two cottages at Qwantani on the shores of the Sterkfontein Dam. The Dam is the sixth largest in South Africa and is situated in the beautiful hills between Harrismith and the Maluti Mountains. The water in the dam is very clean and a lovely shade of blue because most of it is pumped up from the Tugela River at the bottom of the Drakensberg Escarpment. Some of the water flows down the hill again to generate electricity, but most of it ends up flowing out of taps in Gauteng. All this engineering is a significant achievement in its own right while also providing a wonderful non-natural opportunity for wildlife conservation and recreation, mostly fishing, walking and boating. Happy birthday to Cathy and thank you to Keith for providing a truly special holiday to celebrate the event.
