When Bruce, Edith and I agreed to help with home-schooling Ryan, I bought three math work books. This sees us sitting at a desk for one to one and a half hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. He works of the problems and I assist and assess. As I have alluded to in one of the captions below, I have tried to ween Ryan off his tendency to use a number chart to perform addition. I have also tried to get him to break up a seemingly difficult problem into a sequence of smaller simpler problems. Also to use a pencil and paper to perform these operations as we may need to record the results of the intermediate steps as they may be required in subsequent steps.
We are now reaching the end of the second book and he is finally seeing some merit in my madness.
I also have had to concede that he at times does some clever things with his number charts, and sometimes in his head.
